St Peter’s Packed for Midsummer Concert
An enthusiastic audience of nearly 200 music lovers packed the charming Victorian St Peter’s Church at Wrecclesham last week. There was a real buzz of expectation as the Hart Male Voice Choir launched this Mid-Summer Concert with Divine Brahma a dramatic Bizet opener from the popular Pear Fishers opera. This was the start of an eclectic mix of music and songs old and new from such diverse composers as Paul Simon, Richard Wagner, Dylan Thomas, Cy Coleman and Jerome Kern – and that was just the first half.
At the Interval the audience enjoyed the generous hospitality of the St Peter’s church team while previewing the programme for the second half of the concert. There was promise of another good mix of uplifting and exciting songs that included Fields of Gold, Mingulay Boat Song, Funiculi Funicula and the ever popular and challenging Rhythm of Life tongue twister from Sweet Charity, plus a delightful duet from Music Director Kevin Jacot and Accompanist Judith Morgan.
The atmosphere throughout the concert was electric as the appreciative audience spurred on the choir to deliver more exceptional performances that culminated with an unusual in-the-round rendition of the African Trilogy which includes the South African National Anthem. All of the Hart Male Voice Choristers circled the audience for a special surround-sound treat that some of the audience felt was “ really inspiring! “.
St Peter’s Vicar Jaqueline Drake-Smith was delighted to see the church full of smiles as applause for the choir gently subsided. She warmly thanked the choir and everyone involved in the presentation of such a marvellous Fund Raising evening.
